BlackMagic Design Goes Big at NAB2023
10,000 square feet didn’t seem like enough. There were people stacked on each other trying to get a look at the new products, watch demos of the new tools, and just take it all in. That was the scene at the BlackMagic Design booth at NAB this year. Massive!
School Video Programs Have a Big Problem…
High school video production has a memory problem. Not that you forget things; instead programs don’t typically have a way to easily access files from previous projects, years, students, events, etc. A lot of programs have servers that serve as a repository for files but those are essentially poorly labeled file cabinets which aren’t typically easily culled to find files in a timeframe that is most often needed.
The Biggest Production Of My Life Part 5 The Devil Is In The Details
The ideal situation would have the streams available for people to view as easily as possible. The problem became how. In the past, the organization set up two YouTube channels and broadcast to those so the fear became that in order to do six streams we would have to create and manage six different channels… that was not going to be fun and certainly not something I was interested in doing.

the Biggest production of my live (part 2)
A part of my job that I rarely talk about but I really love is the opportunity to give tours of our facility. Students, community members, alumni, and more all come into our space to see what we have going on. A quick look at the newsroom then the “ooh”s and “ahhs of the control room and the mezmerization (yeah, I just made up a word!) of the studio - specifically the application of chromakey and virtual sets. I love showing off what we do but recently something that was said set me back.
The biggest production of my career (part 1)
6 computers running OBS… 14 ElGato Cam Like 4k capture devices … hundreds of feet of HDMI cables… 30 microphones…. 6 audio mixers… hundreds of feet of xlr cables…. 20+ iMac computers… 3 rolls of gaffe tape… a ton of sweat.. No blood (that I know of)... no tears (that I know of)… a couple of expletives… all to produce over 125 hours of live content over two days… by far, the biggest live stream event of my life!
Super Lessons from the Big Game
While I was reading a Super Bowl recap on SportsVideo.org, I realized that there are a lot of lessons to be taken from the preparation and presentation of the Super Bowl that can be used in the classroom. The Sports Video Group’s Ken Kerschbaumer talked with Fox Sports’ Brad Zager about the preparation for the Super Bowl.

Zoom Your Broadcast To The Next Level
I began my job at the University of Georgia in June and while I worked with a Tricaster for many years, I had only worked with the Mini and previous versions. I could not wait to get my hands on the TC2 Elite that waited for me in the control room that lay in the shadows of Sanford stadium on the campus of the 2022 Football National Champions. (I had to get that in there… I think it’s a requirement)
I was more than familiar with the standard SDI cabling and tools and felt like I knew NDI as much as Dr. Andrew Cross…
