New Video System with Instant Replay for School Sports

TV Pro Gear has been building portable production systems for 23 years. These are the systems deployed on all of the major TV networks and are in use by many colleges and universities. Unfortunately, their half-million and up price tag was not affordable for most K-12 schools.

According to Andrew Maisner, President of TV Pro Gear, new technology has enabled the company to develop a low-cost system optimized for shooting sports. At only $39,995, the system includes 3 cameras, 4 channels of instant-replay, slow motion, and a title generator that includes “score-bugs.”

This turnkey video production system is designed to achieve a complete video production right out of the box. It includes JVC GY-HC500 4K cameras, an integrated switching system, a Clear-Com 2-Channel intercom, and an H.264 encoder for direct streaming to your favorite social media platforms.

Genesis-1 Key Features:

  • Supports up to four JVC GY-HC500 4K Handheld Cameras

  • Built-in touchscreen to switch cameras or add titles and graphics

  • Insert pre-recorded video and graphics

  • Instant replay and slow motion

  • Social media connectivity: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram

  • 8x online tutorials

Operated by a touchscreen, you can switch between up to four different camera feeds or loop in additional cameras using NDI. If you want to include pre-recorded footage in your broadcast, you can connect a computer via the HDMI input. An automated 8-input microphone mixer makes it easy to regulate audio levels, which is a challenge for non-professionals on the fly.

There are three Genesis-1 systems available for different use cases. First is a turnkey system designed expressly for sports broadcasting. This system includes four channels of instant replay and slow motion. These are the same effects seen on professional sports networks like ESPN, now accessible to schools through the touch of a button.

The second system uses robotic PTZ (Pan, Tilt, Zoom) cameras instead of operator-controlled cameras. The third option includes a mix of PTZ and operator-controlled cameras. It is ideal for capturing school events or meetings. Picture high school graduation captured by a couple of PTZ cameras mounted in the auditorium and a few student operators in the audience doing one-on-one interviews. With the Genesis-1, another student could be at the control station switching between super wide shots of the ceremony and close ups of students receiving their diplomas.

Regardless of the camera choices, every Genesis-1 system comes with the ability to insert graphics, score-bug, and other lower thirds. A Clear-Com Intercom makes it easy for the director to communicate with the cameraman, even from all the way across the field or stage. The system also includes IFB to streamline communication between the director and the talent.

The Genesis-1 includes a JVC Pro HD 4000 S Switcher, which has the ability to stream to online destinations via RTMP. You can take your broadcast directly online with the integrated H.264 encoder. Live stream to Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, and most other social media platforms. This means you can connect to your entire school community online, even to those members who can’t attend the sports game or event in person.

The biggest advantage of Genesis-1 as opposed to purchasing everything a la carte is that everything fits in a single, shock-mounted, jig-welded steel case called a Flypak™. Because everything is in one box, Genesis-1 is faster to set up, more reliable and quicker to pack up once the shoot is over. Other items, such as the cameras, microphones and headset are stored in locking drawers on the back of the system. So, everything is very secure when not in use.

Genesis-1 has an Input/Output access panel where everything plugs in. It features both HDMI and SDI inputs and outputs as well as audio connectors for the microphones and to feed program audio to a PA system. Because all of the video, audio and network connections are brought to this panel, there is no reason for anyone to go inside the Genesis-1 to hook up an external source or destination. This is another reason why the Genesis-1 is so reliable and easy to use.

“TV Pro Gear’s Video Production Services division shoots hundreds of live events every year. This ‘real-world’ experience ensures that the systems we design and build, such as Genesis-1, will provide all of the functionality, ease-of-use and reliability that demanding customers require,” said Maisner. “Our goal with Genesis-1 was to create a system that solves every video production problem a school might face, all in an easy-to-understand, turnkey production package.”
