3 Things You Need for Your Production Studio This School Year
When school starts up again this fall, whether you’re teaching online full time, part time, or back in the classroom, remote productions are here to stay. Sending students out from behind the news desk creates a more compelling storyline. This affordable video gear and software will transform your ability to capture engaging shots and create professional productions. In comes the NewblueFX Titler Live, AIDA PTZ-X12-NDI, and Nimbus WiMi 6220 Wireless Transmitter.
Teradek VidiU Go and Core Make the Perfect Streaming Bundle for Remote Newscasts
While remote learning was a first for many teachers this year, shooting newscasts remotely is routine for student video production teams. When there’s breaking news at school, your news team has to rush to the area. There’s seldom time to set up a whole production system, and you can rarely count on a reliable internet connection. That’s where the Teradek VidiU Go and Core come in.
New Video System with Instant Replay for School Sports
Genesis-1 includes 3 cameras, 4 channels of instant-replay, slow motion, and a title generator that includes “score-bugs.” This turnkey video production system is designed to achieve a complete video production right out of the box. It includes JVC GY-HC500 4K cameras, an integrated switching system, a Clear-Com 2-Channel intercom, and an H.264 encoder for direct streaming to your favorite social media platforms.
Sports Will Be Back Soon. Will You Be Ready?
The SportsCaster is a “one stop shop” for everything audio during a live event. It’s a 6-channel audio mixer with a built-in intercom system. In one rack unit, you can mix three on-air announcers who are using their Sports Pods, add sideline reports with the “field” input, plus ambient mics with the two “aux” inputs. Now, you have a fully built, well-rounded broadcast.
Best Sound for Live Production, Shooting Indoor Sports
Because of the crowd noise that reverberates within the building, it can be extremely difficult to capture quality audio for indoor sports. The sample setups shown here are for basketball but are easily adapted to other indoor sports.
How AI Will Revolutionize Youth Sports Broadcasting
The director of sales at Pixellot, Charles Prichard, is convinced that there is a tendency that AI will automatically increase production to make sure that youth sports is cost-effective.
Bring Your Hockey Livestreams Out of the Penalty Box with SuiteCG
SuiteCG's latest release includes official support for ice hockey. The user interface allows for tracking goals, with automated goal animations in the free, NDI-enabled graphics package, as well as Shots on Goal, Saves, and Faceoffs Won. Players on Ice, Powerplays, and Delayed Penalties are all controlled with a few easy-access buttons. There is even an indicator for Empty Net!
Best Sound for Live Production, Broadcasting Football
The parabolic microphones will capture the quarterback signals, player collisions, the football being kicked, etc. It is becoming quite common for a lineman to have a microphone imbedded in his pads to help capture the quarter back signals. You can often hear the microphone being turned off just after the ball is hiked.
Sophomore Slump - It’s Happening
Reflecting on the last 6 weeks, I realized that I made a major mistake in how I was running my live productions this year. Last year was our first year and I knew we would be taking it kind of slow. But last year was great! We did a ton of shows… a ton of GREAT shows. Multiple cameras, great audio, the whole sha-bang. So this year, I came in with the same approach… BAD idea.
Jumping Into The Unknown
As for graphics, I am going to go with Titler Live from NewBlue FX. I am actually pretty excited about this. Here’s the plan. The actual graphics operator will be in the “control room” with the tech director and me but I will have another person in the gym keeping time and score updated. Titler Live allows you to control their scoreboard tools remotely via a web interface.
Georgia Tops Nation for Online Sports Streaming
In 2013, the National Federation of High Schools teamed with Atlanta-based PlayOn! Sports to form the NFHS Network, a subscription-based streaming service that broadcasts high school sports on the internet. Today, the network is turning a profit, and the state of Georgia is a big reason why. That’s because the Peach State is the network’s top revenue-generating state in the country.
Reeds Spring High School
Late in the Spring of 2015 I was asked to work on some video projects for our high school graduation ceremony. You know the ones, they are, “no big deal” until a parent or two feels their kid was overlooked or neglected. I always like a new challenge (if you do then video is a good place for you!) so I jumped in with both feet.
Case Study: Transforming Complexity Into Flexibility - UMiami Upgrade
How Midtown Video designed and built a centralized, ESPN-compliant HDTV broadcast production facility enabling University of Miami Athletics to Contribute Live “Hurricanes” Games to the ACC Network.
Want to Major in Sports Journalism? Now You Can
With the expansion of broadcast networks, the rise of heavily trafficked niche outlets, and ever-popular local coverage, sports journalism is one of the few beats that can be called a media growth industry. This fall, Arizona State University’s Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communication debuts its bachelor and master degree programs in sports journalism, its first standalone degree programs for a specific beat and perhaps the first of their kind nationwide.
The Missing Link for Great Sports Coverage
The Sportscaster has allowed me to not only get better audio via the simple application but allows me to coach my students while they are in the moment. Instead of having to do tape sessions a day or so after the excitement of the broadcast has worn off, I can help guide them live. It allows me to have a real producer when we do a show. The producer can help the talent through the broadcast by giving stats, forecasting upcoming storylines, etc.
SuiteCG Announces Team Rosters
Team Rosters has been planned from the beginning as a key feature of SuiteCG MultiSport Scoreboard, and we're excited to get it out the door in time for fall sports. Player selection is a breeze. With three clicks (and in about that many seconds) from the user interface you can have a player's headshots and bio up on the screen. Click to open the roster, click to select the player from large buttons with the players name, uniform, position, a headshot, and then a click in Graphics Control to animate the headshot element.
The Streaming Chronicles - Chapter 3
I have a plan for our live streams next year down to the sport, staffing needs, and budgeted down to the amount of money needed for supplies. We are going to produce at least 125 live events next year and I will pay students in the range of about $8,000 to help produce those games.

Not everyone can be the next Dick Vitale, John Madden, or Vin Scully. However, please listen to their style and creativity. Student broadcasters are in a unique situation, being able to practice their announcing skills in a relatively low pressure, low stress environment. Here are five tips to help student announcers hone their craft.
