High School Broadcast Journalism Project
The High School Broadcast Journalism Project (HSBJ), a journalism education program of RTNDF, promotes broadcast journalism by helping high schools establish and maintain outstanding broadcast journalism programs. With HSBJ’s support, schools, teachers and students receive the information, training and resources needed to create and run successful radio, television and online multimedia programs.
Created by the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation (RTNDF), the High School Broadcast Journalism Project gives students voice in our democracy and inspires the next generation of informed news consumers and news professionals.
The project gives priority to schools with large minority populations and to schools with large numbers of students who qualify for the federal reduced-and-free lunch program.
RTNDF established HSBJ in 2003 with a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The mission was to develop and nurture electronic journalism programs and promote First Amendment education in high schools across the country. Today, this work continues -with a special emphasis on multimedia - through the continued support of the Knight Foundation and other partners.
Support for Schools
In addition to providing small seed grants to help build and continue broadcast journalism programs, HSBJ offers support and advice on other fundraising initiatives. We also establish partnerships between schools and professional broadcast organizations, creating in many cases productive, long-term relationships.
Support for Teachers
HSBJ offers teachers teaching curriculum, online training courses and other support materials. We also sponsor workshops dedicated to production skills, classroom management and journalism excellence. We advocate on behalf of teachers and offer a private, supportive forum where new and veteran teachers can receive input and advice on issues related to broadcast journalism.

Support for Students
To support students, HSBJ sponsors contests that encourage interest in broadcast journalism and First Amendment issues, provides information about student workshops and scholarships and arranges professional broadcasters to lead workshop sessions on topics such as writing, reporting, videography, podcasting and journalism ethics. HSBJ also features an online forum that allows students to share ideas with peers.
