The ATEM Mini Extreme is Blackmagic Design’s most advanced 1 M/E switcher that features 8 inputs, 4 ATEM Advanced Chroma Keyers, a total of 6 independent DVEs, 2 media players, 2 downstream keyers, 16 way multiview, 2 USB connections, and multiple HDMI aux outputs. Also released is the ATEM Mini Extreme ISO model which includes everything in the Extreme plus a more powerful recording engine that can record all 8 inputs plus the program for a total of 9 streams of recording. Our very own Tom White received the Atem Mini Extreme from Blackmagic Design and couldn’t be more excited to share with you his unboxing experience and initial reactions.

The ATEM Mini Extreme by Blackmagic Design is fantastic. Even just the box looks better than anything that Blackmagic Designs have released in a long time. Let's dive in!”

“The software that is used for the ATEM mini line is the same software that is used for the ATEM Constellation 8K. Why is this important for you or your students? If you are preparing your students to get a job in the industry, it is super important that they know what software they are going to be using. If they go for a job that requires them to use a more powerful tool, then they will need to know how to use it. This is what makes Blackmagic’s workflow so great. It is the same software from the $295 Atem Mini all the way through to their highest models.

The Atem Mini Extreme has twice as much power and twice as many inputs (compared to other Atem Mini Models). It has eight HDMI inputs and each one has audio controls. If you are using Pocket Cinemas or Ursas, you can control these cameras over HDMI. No additional cables needed. This is a really cool thing that Blackmagic has started doing with their ATEM line. There are two mic inputs and headphone output. This is really exciting for a lot of reasons. We like to test before we go live and we couldn’t do that before and now we can. It has two HDMI outputs on the back. These are selectable so you can determine what goes where. It has two USB outputs as well. It also encodes inside the box. Hardware versus software encoding. It has DVE options and super source options in this model.

Everything that people have said that they wanted in the previous ATEM previous iterations is now included in this one. Blackmagic Design has done a very good job at creating a product that feels sturdy and doesn’t feel cheap. This is sub $1000 and you can have 8 inputs. This was unheard of 3-5 years ago.

I cannot wait to get my personal unit and provide an in-depth review so make sure to come back and check that out!”
